
Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations Kick Off Sept. 20 with WWII Display Featuring The Flying Aztecs
Colleges month-long celebration highlights free lectures, art and World War II displays and hilarious one-act comedy Las Nuevas Tamaleras
Hispanic Heritage Month begins Sept. 15. Across the United States, communities observe the diversity and innumerable contributions Hispanics have given and continue to provide this country. Each year, Del Mar College also celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a month-long schedule of activities that range from displays, poetry and literature readings, lectures and plays.
Sponsored by the Del Mar College Chapter of the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education, faculty, staff, students and the public can participate in the following activities:
Ongoing, September 20 through October 15 The Flying Aztecs, first floor, White Library, Del Mar College East Campus, Naples off Kosar and Staples, free. Provided as part of Del Mar Colleges celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, The Flying Aztecs is a display of the World War II Hispanic American Aviator Squadron that fought bravely during the war. Tuesday, September 21 Hispanic/Latino Poetry Readings, 11 a.m., Retama Room, second floor, Harvin Student Center, Del Mar College East Campus, Ayers at Kosar, free. Dont miss wonderful examples of poetry written by Hispanic and Latino writers as DMC faculty read from a variety of works. Wednesday, September 22 Lecture Entitled The Huntington Essay: An Assault on the Hispanics, 11 a.m., Conference Room 2, Harvin Student Center, Del Mar College East Campus, Ayers at Kosar, free. As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Del Mar Colleges Dr. Manuel Flores, associate professor of journalism, will cover political scientist Samuel P. Huntingtons controversial article warning that the United States faces the loss of its core Anglo-Protestant culture and may soon be divided into two peoples with two cultures. The article, written by the chair of Harvard Universitys Academy for International and Area Studies, was published in the March/April 2004 issue of Foreign Policy magazine. Saturday, September 25 Las Nuevas Tamaleras, 7 p.m., Richardson Auditorium, Del Mar College East Campus, Baldwin and Ayers. Admission: Canned food item. Written and directed by San Antonio playwright Alicia Mena, Las Nuevas Tamaleras is a one-act bilingual comedy that captures three contemporary Chicanas in an uproariously comical attempt at making tamales for the first time. The production had its world premiere at El Teatro Bilingue de Houstons First Annual Latino Playwrights Festival in 1990 and has since been produced by various theatre companies across Texas, New Mexico, California and Colorado. As part of Del Mar Colleges celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Colleges Chapter of the Texas Association of Hispanics in Higher Educations is pleased to bring Burras Finas Productions and Las Nuevas Tamaleras to the campus and community. Wednesday, September 29 Tejanos: Pride, Passion, Culture, and History: A Review of Tejanos Contributions to Texas and America, 11 a.m., Conference Room 2, Harvin Student Center, Del Mar College East Campus, Ayers at Kosar, free. It's more than just the ranchos and the cows....it's a way of life. As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Del Mar Colleges Dr. Manuel Flores, associate professor of journalism, will review how Tejanos have significantly contributed to the development of Texas and our nation, from the revolutionary war to the civil war and beyond. The Tejanos were here, they're still here and they're claiming their historical legacy in a land they helped tame. Friday, October 1 Opening Reception for Visual Perspectives: Selecciones Hispanas, 7-9 p.m., Joseph A. Cain Memorial Art Gallery, Fine Arts Center, Del Mar College East Campus, Ayers Street, free. In conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month, Visual Perspectives: Selecciones Hispanas features diverse work from 25 South Texas Hispanic artists from the local area. The free exhibit will remain on display through Nov. 24. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. until noon on Friday.
