ISLANDER VOLLEYBALL TO HOST TEXAS A&M-INTERNATIONAL IN HOME OPENER
Riding a three-match winning streak, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders will try to extend it to four when they host Texas A&M-International at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Moody Fieldhouse.
The Dustdevils will enter the match with a 5-2 record, winning their last four matches including 3-0 sweeps in all but one of those matches. Texas A&M-International is entering just its second year of having a collegiate program after a successful first season.
Texas A&M-International picked up wins against Montana Tech, Spring Hill (Ala.), Trinity, Texas A&M-Kingsville and UT-Dallas. Their lone losses came against Georgetown (Ky.) and Houston Baptist.
The Dustdevils are led by Katherine Taju who has picked up 123 kills with just 30 errors in 275 attacks. She is averaging 5.12 kills per game and is second on the team in digs with 75. Jessica Vargas has picked up 72 kills on the year and is second on the team in service aces with 10.
As a team TAMIU is averaging 14.7 kills a game and have a hitting percentage of .233.
The Islanders have been led by senior Lauren Smith, who tallied 52 kills with just seven errors along with a team-high 10 blocks. Smith set a school record with a .867 hitting percentage in a 3-0 win over Savannah State. In the match, Smith collected 14 kills with just one error in 15 total attacks.
TAMUCCs lone loss came against Navy in their 2004 season opener. In the Islanders three-match winning streak, they have lost just two games.
After the home match with Texas A&M-International, the Islanders will travel to Huntsville to compete in the Sam Houston State Tournament with Centenary, Baylor, Tulsa and Sam Houston. They will not return home until Sept. 21 when they host Texas Southern.
BROOM NAMED INDEPENDENT NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Kati Broom, junior college transfer from Tyler Junior College has been named the NCAA Division I Independent newcomer of the week for her performance last weekend.
Broom, a 5-8 outside hitter garnered all-tournament honors at the North Carolina A&T Tournament, helping lead the Islanders to 3-1 record and second place finish. In the four games, Broom picked up 26 kills with just nine errors, averaging 1.8 kills per game and led the team in service aces with 12. Broom tied a school record with seven aces in the Islanders 3-2 win over Campbell
Defensively, Broom was second on the team with 30 digs.
Broom and the rest of the Islanders will open their home season when they host Texas A&M-International tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Moody Fieldhouse.
